Energy in a Box
An Affordable, Accessible, & Reliable renewable energy source

Mission of the project
KOC Bridges to Peace focuses on change for a better tomorrow via peacebuilding, ecology, and governance.
We work with rural communities to craft solutions using locally available resources. Energy in a Box is a training program designed to aid rural villages in windy coastal and Sahel regions to harvest wind energy from recycled materials.
100% Local
Recycled metal, powerful magnets (ferrite & neodynium), copper wiring, & resin are all harvested from scrapyards and local markets. We work with what is available.
Affordable
Locally sourced parts means that local youth and women can build an effective small wind turbine and a mast for less than 50 dollars. Low costs means an easier entry into the high-demand energy market.
Accessilble
Practical hands-on training workshops are free to allow the development of a local well of knowledge and community of practice. Participants build one or more turbines collectively.
Reliable
Various models are tested for power output and durability in harsh salty coastal conditions or in the sandy Sahel winds. Average output of 40 to 120 Watts under moderate wind conditions of 5 m/s.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
The "Energy in a Box" education model requires mobility and flexibility to bring our workshops closer to the people who need it the most. Your donation will help support transportation, housing, and meals to participants and trainers in remotes part of the African continent. For instance, a 4-day workshop for 15 participants in northern Ghana and Benin costs on average 2,000 US dollars. With your support, we hope to hold four workshops in 2025 in northern Benin and Ghana, where youth and women from 20 villages will build their own turbines to completion and mount them on a tower for power generation.
